macOS includes a range of built-in and compatible tools for interacting with a computer beyond the standard keyboard and mouse. These access methods may be used individually or in combination, depending on a person's abilities, the task at hand, and the environment. OVERVIEW
Every Mac supports several ways to interact with the system, and no single method works best for everyone. Many people rely on a combination of methods that can change depending on the task, the setting, fatigue, or how their abilities change over time. Before assuming specialized hardware is necessary, it is often worth reviewing what a standard keyboard, trackpad, or mouse can already do once accessibility settings are adjusted.
STANDARD KEYBOARD AND MOUSE ACCESS
Conventional keyboards and pointing devices remain the most common way to use a Mac, and built-in accessibility settings can often improve access without any additional hardware. Adjusting click and scroll behavior, cursor size, tracking speed, and key response can make a meaningful difference before specialized equipment is considered. Reviewing these settings first is a reasonable starting point for many users.
KEYBOARD ACCESSIBILITY
macOS includes several features that support keyboard use for people who type differently than a typical two-handed user. Keyboard navigation allows many actions to be performed without a mouse, and keyboard shortcuts can reduce the number of steps needed for common tasks. Sticky Keys allows modifier keys such as Command, Control, Option, or Shift to be pressed one at a time instead of held down simultaneously, which can help people who cannot press multiple keys together. Slow Keys adds a brief delay between when a key is pressed and when it registers, which can reduce accidental keystrokes for people with tremor or limited fine motor control. The Accessibility Keyboard is an on-screen keyboard that can be operated by mouse, switch, or another pointing method rather than physical keys. Key repeat settings can be adjusted or turned off for people who accidentally trigger repeated characters. Some users benefit from alternative keyboards, such as compact, one-handed, large-key, or ergonomic designs, and some use a keyguard, a rigid overlay with holes over each key, to improve accuracy on a standard keyboard. On-screen keyboard access, often paired with switch scanning or another pointing method, provides an alternative to a physical keyboard.
MOUSE AND POINTER ALTERNATIVES
Not everyone can use a standard mouse comfortably or reliably, and macOS supports a range of alternative pointing devices and settings. Trackballs and joysticks separate the motion of selecting a target from the fine motor demands of gripping and moving a traditional mouse. Trackpads offer another built-in option, and some people do better with a trackpad than a mouse, or the reverse. A variety of alternative mice exist, including larger, smaller, vertical, or single-handed designs. For people who cannot use their hands for pointing, head-controlled pointing options can translate head movement into cursor movement. Pointer customization, such as cursor size, speed, and click behavior, can make an existing device more usable before other equipment is considered. Where supported, dwell-based selection allows a person to select an item by pausing the pointer over it for a set time rather than clicking, which can benefit people who can move a pointer but cannot reliably click. Other alternative pointing methods continue to be developed, and what works best is highly individual.
SWITCH ACCESS
Switch access allows a person to operate a computer using one or more external switches rather than a keyboard or mouse. In switch scanning, the system highlights options one at a time or in groups, and the person presses a switch when the desired option is highlighted. This approach requires more steps than direct selection but can open up computer access for people with significant motor limitations. VOICE ACCESS
Voice-based interaction allows a person to control a Mac and enter text using spoken commands instead of, or in addition to, a keyboard and mouse. Voice Control allows spoken commands to open applications, click items, and navigate the interface, while Dictation converts speech into text. These tools can support hands-free interaction for people with limited hand or arm use, or for anyone who prefers speaking over typing in a given situation. Voice-based access depends on accurate speech recognition, a suitable environment for speaking aloud, and an individual's speech characteristics, so it may not be the right fit for everyone and is often used alongside other access methods.
EYE GAZE / EYE TRACKING
Compatible eye-tracking systems may provide an alternative way to move a pointer and make selections for some users, based on where a person is looking on the screen. Selection is often confirmed through dwell, pausing on a target for a set time, or through a physical switch activated while the eyes remain on the target. Effective use depends on stable positioning of the person and the device, an accurate calibration process, and attention to fatigue, since sustained visual targeting can be tiring over time. Lighting, glare, eyewear, and other environmental factors can also affect how well an eye-tracking system performs for a given individual. This page does not recommend a specific commercial eye-gaze system; the right system for an individual is best determined through trial and professional guidance.
TOUCH AND MOBILE INTEGRATION
Many Mac users also interact with other Apple devices, such as an iPhone or iPad, and some accessibility features and inputs can work across devices. For example, a paired device may extend keyboard, pointer, or handwriting input to a Mac, and certain accessibility settings can sync across a person's Apple devices when signed into the same account. This can simplify setup for people who already rely on consistent access methods elsewhere. This section is intended as a general orientation rather than a technical walkthrough.
ACCESS METHOD SELECTION
Choosing an access method is not a one-time decision. The right approach depends on the person, the task, the environment, the access method itself, and the technology being used together. Relevant factors include how reliably a person can move a given body part, accuracy, speed, fatigue over the course of a session, positioning and seating, endurance across a full day, cognitive demands such as memory or sequencing, visual demands, the amount of training required, and the reality that needs and abilities can change over time. Because of this, access methods are often reviewed and adjusted periodically rather than selected once and left unchanged.
