Access methods are the ways a person physically selects what they want to communicate on an AAC system. The right access method depends on an individual's motor abilities, vision, positioning, endurance, and the environments where they communicate. WHY ACCESS MATTERS
Even the best-designed AAC system only works if the person can reliably select messages. Choosing an access method is about matching the method to the individual so that communication is as accurate, efficient, and comfortable as possible. Access can also change over time, so it is reviewed as abilities and needs evolve.
DIRECT SELECTION
Direct selection means the user chooses a target directly, most often by touching it. This can be done with a finger, a hand, a stylus, or a head or mouth pointer. For some users, a keyguard (a physical overlay with holes over each target) improves accuracy. Direct selection is typically the fastest method when a person has the motor control to use it reliably.
SWITCH SCANNING
Switch scanning is used when direct selection is not reliable. The system highlights options one at a time or in groups, and the user activates a switch when the desired option is highlighted. Scanning can be arranged in different patterns, such as row-column scanning, to speed up selection. Timing, switch placement, and scan speed are adjusted to the individual. Scanning requires more steps than direct selection but opens communication to people with significant motor limitations.
EYE-GAZE ACCESS
Eye-gaze (eye-tracking) systems use a camera to detect where a person is looking on the screen, allowing selection by gaze, often confirmed by dwelling on a target for a set time or by blinking. Eye-gaze can provide relatively fast, direct-style access for people who cannot use their hands, though it depends on stable positioning, calibration, and lighting conditions.
OTHER AND COMBINED METHODS
Some users rely on head tracking, joysticks, or partner-assisted scanning, in which a communication partner reads options aloud and the user signals a choice. Many people use more than one method depending on the situation, fatigue level, or position. Matching and fine-tuning access is an ongoing, individualized process.
POSITIONING AND SETUP
Access works best when the person is well positioned and the device is mounted or placed appropriately. Seating, device mounting, screen angle, and switch placement all affect accuracy and endurance. Occupational and physical therapists often collaborate with the AAC team on positioning.
FEATURES TO CONSIDER
Relevant factors include accuracy, speed, physical effort and fatigue, the ability to adjust settings such as dwell time or scan speed, and how well the method holds up across different environments and throughout the day. Trialing methods in real settings is the best way to compare them.
