Smart home technology uses internet-connected devices, such as smart plugs, smart bulbs, smart thermostats, and smart speakers, that can be controlled remotely through an app, voice command, or automation routine. These consumer smart home products can sometimes serve accessibility purposes by allowing hands-free or remote control of household devices, in addition to their general convenience uses.
LIGHTS
Smart lighting can be turned on, off, or dimmed using voice commands, mobile apps, switches, or automation schedules, which can reduce the need to physically reach or operate wall switches.
DOORS
Some accessible door solutions include automatic door openers, smart locks, and video doorbells that allow a person to see and communicate with visitors and control door locks remotely or through alternative access methods. Any door-related modifications, especially automatic door openers, may involve installation by a qualified professional and should account for building and safety codes.
THERMOSTATS
Smart thermostats can be adjusted remotely through an app or voice command, and some support scheduling and automation that reduces the need for frequent manual adjustment.
TVS AND MEDIA DEVICES
Voice control, smart remotes, and accessible mobile apps can allow a person to change channels, adjust volume, and select media without needing to press small buttons on a standard remote control.
APPLIANCES
